Davido Uses FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert to Spotlight Oyo School Abductions
Famous Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, is currently trending in the news for doing something a lot of people consider phenomenal and spectacular.
He used the global platform of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert to draw massive international attention to Nigeria’s increasing insecurity issues, especially the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State, south western Nigeria.
During his performance, Davido appeared on stage wearing a custom-made black leather jacket decorated with green buttons bearing the names of pupils and teachers kidnapped during coordinated attacks on three schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area in May 2026.
The attacks, which were carried out by armed assailants, left several students and teachers in captivity and sparked nationwide grief, outrage and attention. The situation worsened following reports confirming the death of a mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun. Public anger intensified after a graphic disturbing video allegedly showing the teacher’s execution surfaced online.
This particular occurrence triggered protests across affected communities, with many residents, students, and educators taking to the streets and blocking major roads to demand the release of the abducted children and teachers and to also demand for stronger security measures for schools and rural areas.
Davido, using his appearance at the international event as a platform for advocacy, called for urgent action from government authorities and everyone concerned. Prominently displayed on the back of his jacket were the words, “BRING THEM HOME,” a message urging the rescue and safe return of those still being held captive.
Speaking backstage before taking the stage, the multiple award-winning superstar expressed deep concern over the tragic abductions and killing and appealed to both federal and state governments to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims.
This gesture was welcomed by so many Nigerians and they thanked him for amplifying his voice to speak up for those in captivity. He also got dragged and called names by several others online, with some saying he was just seeking attention. Whichever way, the topmost priority was that an important message was passed to authorities and the government as a whole, especially on the global scale.
Beyond his music career, Davido has built a name and a huge reputation in social advocacy and philanthropy. Since breaking into the spotlight with major hit songs, he has consistently used his influence to support humanitarian causes and draw attention to issues affecting vulnerable communities.
In 2022, he established the Davido Adeleke Foundation to provide structured support for orphanages and individuals in need. Over the years, he has also contributed to various charitable initiatives and leveraged his social media platforms to raise awareness about pressing national concerns.
